Community Forum > Storage Pool HA support in SoftLayer

1) Is the HA support for iSCSI (as shown in available in SoftLayer?

2) Which version of QuantaStor provides this support?

Hello Gopi,

Please note that for enterprise level customer support questions it is best to reach out to the OSNEXUS support team here:

Regarding your question, we are providing initial support for the SoftLayer iSCSI Performance and Endurance storage for use as a backend for QuantaStor appliances at Softlayer starting with the QuantaStor 3.16.0 release. We have confirmed that the iSCSI SoftLayer storage will allow for a shared storage pool between two QuantaStor appliances that would allow for the use of our Storage Pool HA feature. However, there are a few small configuration items related to the Multipath configuration for the SoftLayer iSCSI storage that we are ironing out that are required for a successful Storage Pool HA deployment and we plan to have that resolved with a 3.16.1 release.

For planning purposes we can let you know what the recommended hardware deployment for a QuantaStor Storage Pool HA would be:

2x Head nodes in a 1U or 2U configuration each with the following recommended minimum specifications:
CPU: Dual processors with 8+ CPU cores total
Memory: 64GB-256GB of memory depending on the uses case.
RAID controller for OS disks.
Disks: 2x Hard disks for use as a RAID1 mirror for OS
Front end Network: at least 1x 1GbE for client connectivity on a private SoftLayer Network.
Backend Network: at least 1x 1GbE(10GbE recommended) for connectivity to SoftLayer Private network with access to iSCSI Performance or Endurance storage LUNs.
Licensing: Licensed capacity for the RAW iSCSI Performance or Endurance storage presented to the QuantaStor Appliance. For example if you present 4x 10TB performance storage iSCSI luns to the QuantaStor you will want the QuantaStor to have the 48TB license.

For data resiliency we recommend configuring your Storage Pool that uses the SoftLayer iSCSI performance or endurance storage to use a level of RAID at the ZFS Storage Pool layer, either RAID10, RAID50 or RAID60

Please note that at this time the Storage Pool HA feature does not support the Software Encryption feature for encrypting disk block devices.

If you have any other questions related to the SoftLayer enterprise storage features available with QuantaStor in the SoftLayer cloud, please contact SoftLayer via or OSNEXUS support via

Thank You,
Chris Golden

I'm looking to see if QuantaStor HA as described in this thread is available/validated in SoftLayer now. We have around a dozen different QuantaStor systems deployed in SoftLayer all supporting ESXi workloads. Each and every one of these systems is a single point of failure today that I can't patch/maintain as our customer requires near 24/7 uptime. I have a lot of anxiety about running workloads with no storage redundancy...

Hello Jarrod,

Yes we do have options for High Availability at SoftLayer.

Please note that our forums are for the Community edition license, for inquiries regarding Enterprise Edition licenses like those offered by IBM SoftLayer, I recommend reaching out to the OSNEXUS Sales Engineering team at to engage with a Sales Engineer about your needs and get assistance with designing a solution for deployment at IBM SoftLayer.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank You,
Chris Golden

For block storage the two primary HA options are our scale-out Ceph block storage and our tiered ZFS clustered SAN storage. Here are the wiki pages on those:
Cluster HA Storage Pools (ZFS based)
Scale-out block storage with iSCSI (Ceph based)
